How to jump start a car safely
Dead battery? Start with the vehicle owner's manual. Battery locations, remote jump posts, hybrid and EV procedures, and prohibited connection points vary by model. Use this checklist to decide whether you can proceed safely.
What you need
Jumper cables
- A compatible donor vehicle, but only if both vehicle manuals permit the setup
- Jumper cables in good condition and suitable for the vehicles
- Eye protection and gloves
Portable jump starter
- A portable jump starter rated for the vehicle
- The vehicle manual and the pack's instructions
- A pack with enough charge for the attempt and within its stated temperature limits
When not to attempt a jump start
- The vehicle or battery is smoking, on fire, leaking, swollen, frozen or suspected frozen, unusually hot, visibly damaged, or giving off an unusual odor.
- The terminals are badly corroded, loose, damaged, or inaccessible.
- Either manual does not clearly permit the setup or you cannot identify the approved jump points.
- You do not have the right equipment or are not confident about the procedure.
- Traffic, darkness, ice, heavy rain, or another hazard makes it unsafe to work around the vehicle.
If any of these conditions apply, do not touch the battery or move closer for a better look. Move away and call 911 for a fire or immediate danger. Before connecting anything
- Use this procedure only outdoors. Never run either engine in a garage or another enclosed or partially enclosed space, including an attached garage with the door open.
- Remove metal jewelry (rings, watches, bracelets)
- Do not let cable clamps touch each other
- Do not lean over the battery while making connections
- Use only cables with intact insulation and fully insulated clamps
- Keep cables away from moving engine parts (fans, belts)
- Follow both vehicles' manuals for gear position and shutdown state
- Set parking brakes and keep the vehicles from touching
- Keep sparks, flames, cigarettes, and metal tools away from batteries
Using jumper cables
1. Position the vehicles
- Park the helper car close enough for the cables to reach, but do not let the vehicles touch
- Turn off both engines
- Open both hoods
2. Connect the cables
Use the connection order and jump points in the disabled vehicle's manual. A common conventional 12V procedure is shown below only for orientation. Do not use it when a manufacturer specifies something different.
- Connect the red clamp to the disabled battery's positive (+) terminal.
- Connect the other red clamp to the donor battery's positive (+) terminal.
- Connect the black clamp to the donor battery's negative (-) terminal.
- Connect the other black clamp to the manufacturer-designated ground point on the disabled vehicle.
The designated ground point keeps the final connection away from the battery. Some vehicles use remote terminals or procedures that differ, which is why the manual controls.
3. Start the helper car
- Start the working vehicle
- Follow the donor vehicle and disabled vehicle manuals; do not rev the donor engine unless its manufacturer directs it
4. Try the disabled vehicle
- Try to start the disabled vehicle as its manual directs
- Stop if the cables heat up, a warning appears, you smell something unusual, or the vehicle does not respond as the manual describes
- Repeated cranking can damage components, so stop rather than guessing
5. Disconnect the cables
Unless the manufacturer says otherwise, disconnect in reverse order without allowing the clamps to touch:
- Remove the black clamp from the designated ground point on the disabled vehicle.
- Remove the black clamp from the donor battery's negative (-) terminal.
- Remove the red clamp from the donor battery's positive (+) terminal.
- Remove the red clamp from the formerly disabled battery's positive (+) terminal.
6. After the engine starts
- Check the dashboard for charging-system warnings
- Follow the vehicle manual's post-jump instructions
- Have the battery and charging system tested
- A short drive may not restore a deeply discharged or failing battery
Using a portable jump starter
A portable pack avoids positioning a donor vehicle, but it still has model-specific instructions and electrical risk.
- Read the vehicle and jump-pack manuals
- Verify voltage, polarity, charge level, and the designated connection points
- Turn off loads and place the vehicle in the required gear state
- Connect and activate the pack exactly as its manufacturer directs
- Stop on any warning, heat, swelling, smoke, unusual odor, or failed attempt
- Disconnect in the instructed order and recharge the pack after use
Portable packs do not require a second vehicle. Some include reverse-polarity and low-voltage protections, but features and safe operating limits vary. Check the manual instead of relying on marketing claims.
Have the battery and charging system tested
Testing is especially important if:
- Starting has become slow or inconsistent
- The vehicle needs repeated jump starts
- A battery or charging warning remains on
- Terminals, cables, or the battery case show damage or heavy corrosion
- The battery is beyond the maker's expected service period
Local auto-parts stores, repair shops, and dealerships may offer testing. Confirm that a location can test your vehicle before you go. Replace or repair parts only after the actual fault is identified.
Common mistakes to avoid
Using the wrong connection order
An incorrect connection can cause:
- Electrical damage
- A battery explosion, although this is rare
- Charging-system or control-module damage
The vehicle manual takes priority over any remembered shortcut or mnemonic.
Letting the clamps touch
Contact between the clamps can create sparks, damage electronics, cause injury, or ruin the jumper cables.
Connecting incompatible vehicles
- Do not connect vehicles or packs with incompatible voltages.
- Hybrid, EV, diesel, start-stop, and classic-vehicle procedures vary.
- If either manual does not clearly permit the setup, do not improvise.
Cranking for too long
If the vehicle does not respond as the manual describes, stop. The problem could involve the starter, fuel pump, or alternator instead of the battery.
